Principal’s Corner – February 22

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you back to the beginning of our third semester.  This is a very busy time of year. The New York state exams are upon us, with the English Language Arts being only twenty-nine (school) days away and Mathematics thirty-five (school) days away.  In order to ensure your child’s best performance we ask the following:

  1. Please make sure your child comes to school everyday ready and prepared to work. In addition, please make sure your child completes all homework assignments, everyday.
  2. Please make sure your child attends one of our tutoring sessions. These sessions are available to help your child receive the necessary support.
  3. Please make sure your child studies at home, everyday.

Students received assignments prior to break.  Assignments for all classes were collected today and each one will receive a grade for the third marking period.  As a reminder, late assignments will not receive any credit as we prepare our students to be responsible citizens and ready for college.  Phone calls and letters will go out today for any child that did not turn in the required assignments.

Student-led conferences will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016 form 1:00pm till 3:30pm for the afternoon session and 5:00pm-8:00pm for the evening sessions.  If you would like to attend at an earlier date/time, please call Ms.Ovalles to schedule an appointment.  Report cards have already been distributed for the second marking period.  For these conferences we will discuss grades for the third marking period and distribute progress reports.  I strongly suggest that you ask the professors for your child’s exam grades and assessments to understand their grades, as well as view their portfolios and ask what else can be done at home to help improve your child’s performance.

Report cards were given out to students on Friday, February 5, 2016.  If your child received a failing grade or a promotion in doubt letter, please schedule a meeting with his/her Professors and or the Assistant Principal/Principal.  We need to develop an action plan to ensure your child is receiving the necessary support to ensure academic success.

Reminder, students earn scholar dollars every week for uniform and excellent behavior. These scholar dollars can be used at our KAPPA Store to purchase a variety of items: books, pencils, pens, movie tickets, games and KAPPA shirts. Please check your child weekly to monitor the amount of scholar dollars that he/she receives.

Ms. Jean Colon, Principal, I.A.
