KAPPA III Principal’s Corner – May 8th

I hope you enjoyed your weekend.  The New York State Math Exam will be administered this week, starting tomorrow May 2nd, 2016 and ending Thursday, May 4th, 2017.  Once again, the test will be untimed.  It is important that students eat a hearty breakfast and arrive on time every day.  Testing strategies to remember:  Use time wisely, read all directions and questions carefully, attempt every question, actively reason through the questions and use process of elimination to help you choose the correct answer in a multiple choice question.
Our After School and Saturday Academy has concluded.  We will offer tutoring for all students that are failing or at risk of failing for the year.  It is essential you monitor your child’s grades through Skedula, on a weekly basis.  You may schedule an appointment, if you want to discuss your child’s progress with teachers at any point this year, with Ms. Ovalles.  You are also encouraged to attend our parent engagement time, which takes place every week on Tuesdays 2:45-3:15pm.  Please note, report cards were distributed last week to all students.
We are on our final marking period of the year.  The end of the school year is shortly coming to an end.  I would like to encourage students, staff and parents to keep learning alive and continue with the important study habits we have discussed all year, as they are critical to the next year and beyond.  Please mark your calendars, our last student-led conference will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2017.
I would like to congratulate all fifty-five students who participated in the AMS Pi5NY Math Competition this Saturday, April 29th, 2017.  It was a fun competition that inspired our students to greater achievement.  May is a busy month for us as we have scheduled various events for our students and families.  Please review the calendar and continue to support your child’s educational journey that will lead them to success.  Today begins our nutrition class that will consist of eight sessions and participants will receive a certificate upon completion of all sessions.  Certification can be used to obtain employment at a daycare center.  All nutrition classes will be given in Spanish.  Camp Becket will host team-building activities for the 6th grade students on Saturday, May 6th and on Saturday, May 13th for 7th grade students.
Tomorrow we will celebrate National Teacher’s Day.  We would like to take a moment to thank our KAPPA III teachers and all the extraordinary teachers in our community for their hard work and dedication inside and outside of the classroom.  Thank you for making a difference in our student’s life.
Ms. Jean Colon, Principal
